If you are a fan of the series “Tunga” then you definitely need no introduction to the name Dambaza, of the Gwaku warriors. Yes the guy with the six-packs that’s the one! Lifestyle Magazine managed to get hold of the television star and he shared more about his life and career.
For those who don’t know you please introduce yourself and tell us a bit about yourself.
Born 23 years ago, Petros Mazhata affectionately known as Peter Petmaz is a passion driven film & TV actor, a stuntman, a fitness model, a rapper & an acrobatics/gymnastics performer, from Glennorah, Harare.
When did you start acting?
I started acting in 2016
Tell us some of the films/dramas that you have been part of in the past.
Well i haven’t done much. I featured on “The Oath” a 90 minute film produced & directed by Fungai Makoni, this was my first appearance in 2016. In 2017 i featured on “Haunted Trip” an action thriller film produced by Ray Mthandi & Directed by Godfrey Miles Chivese. On that same year, i also acted on “Maroro”(a fantasy feature film set to be released in January 2019) written by Brian Kugara, produced & directed by B Manyara. Now I’m currently on “Tunga” an epic Tv series, produced & directed by W Slim Magombedze, which airs every Friday at 19:30 on Zbc TV.
Tell us a bit about your role on Tunga.
Dambaza is the name of the character i play on Tunga. Dambaza is a strong, tough & straight forward guy who happens to be part of a savage clan called Gwaku warriors.
Now if someone mentions Tunga the first thing to come to one’s mind most probably is those unique haircuts………………. So for the sack of our readers and others who are curious to know, do you walk around with those haircuts like that all the time???
Yes we do walk around with the haircut, only during the shooting days, but with a hat or a cap on kkkkkkkkkk. Actually we shoot in advance & we usually go on a 1 or 2 week camp, after one is done with the shoot it’s up to him to shave the hair cut off or keep it till the next season shoot.
Oh okay so any other project(s) you are currently doing besides Tunga?
None at the moment
Growing up was acting your dream job?
It was never my dream job. It’s a talent that i just discovered in myself along the way.
Besides acting what else do you do?
I’m a part time machine assistant at Hunyani paper making & packaging in Southerton, Harare.
In your own view how is the Film Industry in Zimbabwe.
So far so good. It’s not yet vibrant but we are getting there. Most of the filmmakers are standardizing their works and there is a significant improvement in terms of good quality production.
What are some of the challenges you are facing as an actor?
2) Zim film industry is not paying enough, this i can say is the biggest challenge.
In Zimbabwe who can you say is your best actor or actress? And internationally?
In Zimbabwe i would say Eddie Sandifolo. Internationally Scott Adkins.
If you could work with any Director in Zim who would that be and why?
Anna Lee of Invision Studios. She and her crew are super good. I love their professionalism.
Any words of encouragement to someone who wants to take acting as a career?
Be yourself, have faith in yourself. If you don’t stand for something you will fall for anything, Stand up & chase your dream.
